The van Voorst Jazz Quartet or trio is made up of drums, upright bass, piano, and saxophone. The group plays a mix of jazz standards and original compositions that styles compare from Thelonious Monk to modern or experimental. Due to this versatility the group can captivate almost any audience and serve as music for almost any situation ranging from Jazz brunches/ dinners, functions, art exhibits, to showcases at jazz venues.

 

Personnel

Jan van Voorst van Beest - Drummer Jan van Voorst van Beest has been teaching (Tony Boffa School of Music) and playing music throughout New England for the last 17 years. Jan has great experience putting together the perfect group to compliment any function. He has showcased his groups to packed jazz venues across New England. Jan studied music with the late and well renowned drummer Alan Dawson. Jan has also performed with musicians such as Alex Foster (Miles Davis ), Vardan Ovsepian, Curtis Clark, and others. Jan has been on a number of local jazz recordings and has also done studio drumming for Will Akerman's label, Imaginary Road (Polygram).

Curtis Clark - Born in Chicago 1950, moved and spent his student years in Los Angeles where he started composing and playing the piano. After Curtis graduated in music theory and composition from the renowned Californian institute of Arts in Valencia, Curtis set out for New York. There he began working and recording with Angeleno David Murray. Influenced by Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Thelonious monk and John Coltrane, Curtis has become a fascinating pianist whose passionate style has been hailed in New York, Paris and Amsterdam. Whilst working with various groups, Curtis has played with many great musicians such as Oscar Brown jr., Julian Priester, Art Taylor,, David Murray, Richard Davis, Abby Lincoln, Charles Taylor, The Delfonics.

Jim Lyden - A native of Portland, Maine, Jim Lyden began playing bass in the late 60's gaining experience working with blues, funk, and rock groups in Northern New England. He studied with both jazz and classical bassists including Dan Hall and John Lockwood. Jim maintains a busy performing schedule and can be heard on several jazz and folk recordings. He has performed in Hungary with the Mary Anne Driscoll Quintet and as well as Germany and Holland with others. Free-lance work has led Jim to play with John LaPorta, Brad Terry, Roswell Rudd, Herb Pomeroy, Larry Garland, Frank Foster, Don Doane, Jacki King, Roy Frazee, along with many great local musicians.

Matt Langley - As a member of the Charlie Kohlhase Quintet since 1988, Matt has recorded five compact discs of original material on the Accurate label, toured the United States extensively and Performed in Jazz festivals from the Boston Globe Festival to the Rutebega Jazz Jam in Knoxville, Illinois. The group has given clinics and master classes as well as individual lessons in universities, high schools and even grade schools throughout the United States. The CKQ's release, The Charlie Kohlhase Quintet Plays the Music of Roswell Rudd, on the Nada record label features the quintet performing alongside jazz legend Roswell Rudd. The CD was voted best Jazz album in the Boston Music Awards of 2002. Charlie and Matt have documented thier long standing saxophone duo experiments on the Boxholder Records release You Start and toured the midwest promoting the CD in the fall of 2001 & 2003. Matt is a member of Charlie's current (2005) Quintet - The Explorer's Club - as well as the 8 member saxophone ensemble, The Saxophone Support Group. Matt has performed or recorded with Ron Carter, Fred Hersch, John Tchicai, John Medeski, Billy Martin, Chris Wood, Dave Fuzinski, Matt Wilson, Sam Palafian and many others.
